Dayton at St. Lukes

Dayton started a new preschool this year. Here is a picture of his first day. (cell phone picture, not the best quality). :o)

I've attached an email below that I already sent out to some. There was a really nice story of Dayton's kind heart during his 2nd week at St. Lukes.

So, I went in to drop Dayton off at St. Lukes Preschool today. This is the end of the 2nd week of school, so kids and teachers are trying to learn about each other and find the routine and their place in the social aspect of it all (Including myself.. I’ve been asking a lot of questions and feeling like a bit of a pest, but wanting to hear about the days and how Dayton is adjusting to the new place).

Well today when dropping Dayton off, one of the pre-school teachers Ms. Tracy (she teaches the younger kids) came up to me and said, “ I have to tell you. I have two boys of my own and your son brought me to tears that I have never experienced.” I stood there not fully grasping what she meant and basically said “OK” with a confused looked on my face. She said “your son is truly an amazing kid”. Again, I said “OK” with a big grin on my face and said “Thank you”. She then proceeded to tell me this story of Dayton during rest time yesterday.

Dayton was making his bed up for the rest time (around 12:45). There was a little boy in the room that was either new to St. Lukes (newer than 2 weeks) or he was new to the resting room, I’m not sure which. Anyway this was a new child to the rest area and he was younger than Dayton so he wasn’t in Dayton’s normal class during preschool time. Well, this little boy was very sad about the rest and was crying for his mommy. He said he missed his mommy. Dayton stopped making his bed, went over to the boy and gave him a hug and said “It will be OK. Would you like me to sing you a song?” The little boy must have said yes, because Dayton paused for a long time. One of the teachers watching this (already near tears) said “Dayton, what song were you going to sing?” Dayton had his finger by his mouth in deep thought and said “I’m thinking”… Then he busted out in “You are my sunshine”.
If there was a dry adult eye up to that point… there wasn’t any more. He proceeded to sing the entire song for him, gave him a hug and went back to making his bed. The little boy must have made another noise because Dayton decided that he needed to give some more advice. Dayton went over there and touched his arm and said “You know, if you are scared… all you need to do is think about Jesus, he’ll be there for you”. Then went to his own bed for quiet time. This brought on another round of tears for the teachers.

WOW… I realized I was holding my breath and took a deep sigh, wiped a tear and hugged the Ms. Tracy! Ms. Linda his actual pre-school classroom teacher said she cried again while telling the story to her husband and Ms. Kelly who also teaches Pre-K (the one that asked what song he was going to sing) said she cried too… we all just stood there watching Dayton sitting at the table playing with a keyboard piano not even realizing how he touches people’s lives. Ms. Tracy while still watching Dayton said you are doing a great job!

As I type this, I take another deep sigh…

To make this story a little lighter… I think Dayton won the hearts of the teachers! ;o)
